US staff sacked over smoking ban
Weyco says it is proud of its stance on smoking
Four workers in the United States have been sacked after refusing to take a test to determine if they were smokers.
They were employees of Michigan-based healthcare firm Weyco, which introduced a policy banning its staff from smoking - even away from the workplace.

The firm says it is to keep health costs down and has helped 14 staff to stop smoking, but opponents say the move is a violation of workers' rights.

If the firm survives a potential legal challenge, it could set a precedent.

Weyco gave its staff a stark ultimatum at the end of last year - either stop smoking completely on 1 January or leave their jobs.

A job well done... now they need to go after the drinkers, the over the counter or legal prescription druggies, the folks who like to sleep around, the over-eaters, the folks who tend to speed/run lights... and it goes on and on and on ...
Smoking causes cancer. Drugs have all sorts of side effects which create a need for other drugs. Drinking causes lots of things from liver cancer, hepatitis, crabs, STDs to tickets, divorces, etc... Sleeping around causes all sorts of diseases and if one's married, causes some possible lethal problems. Over-eaters are slowly killing themselves. Speed/light runners are taking their life and other lives in their own hands.... Tell me, what isn't a health risk?

What isn't a health risk? Why blogging, of course. :)

I'll admit, when I first heard about this idea, I thought it was kinda, sorta, a semi-good one. It's always a positive thing when you encourage/assist folks in riding themselves of the smoking habit. Then, like all good things it got out of control. They don't just want to help you quit they want to make you quit. Over the line more than just a bit there wouldn't you say? As you point out, if they succeed at this cause what's to prevent them from taking the next logical step? Over-eaters? Those who obsess over excercise? What about hypochondriacs? The bi-polar? Or just plain ole lazy people? 99% of Americans fall into one or more of these catagories. Pretty soon the only people not on unemployment would be the, darn near perfect people. Which in it's self could be a health hazzard. Cause the way I see it, being near perfect, and being the only people employed, could be a risk in it's own unique way. It would darn sure put you at the top of the list of people most likely to be shot by a disgruntled ex-employee!

Raws Pee-row used to fire people for "adultry," whatever that is. He used to have people followed around. So much for "traditional conservative" respect for personal liberty.

Creeping authoritarianism is everywhere, on all sides. Do you know how many jobs now require a piss-test? Can you imagine your parents having submitted to such indignities? And for what? The dopers know how to beat them, even in the military.

It's all part of an attempt to re-enslave humanity, which never ends. So we have to fight it, endlessly: A LOT harder than we have been doing. Whatever happened to "just say no"? Why do we wait for Congress or the Courts to protect us? What happened to the rational, fair-minded majority just refusing to go along with such bullshit?

Wanna know what happened to America? The Great Silent Majority, that's what.

Masterbation - Well, I heard it caused hairy palms...Which could be pretty cool if you were a werewolf... but could be life threatening, too:(

Masterbation should be Masturbation. Sometimes it's hard to type properly!
