I learn something new every day.

I received an E-mail from Liky, who has the blog Liky Against the World, containing an address of a very helpful webpage called Babelfish. You can take a block of text and change it from, say, English and translate it to Spanish, French, etc. or vice versa. I think this will be VERY helpful in my attempts to learn Spanish. Thank you Liky!

Comments:
Be careful! Some of these translations are, uh, eccentric. Try taking a passage of good English, send it through in Spanish, and then have the translator send the Spanish back to English.

You won't end up with good English...

These sites are cool, but not anything close to perfect.

That sounds interesting - I will try that and see what I get. As long as it is the gist of what I'm saying, I won't be too unhappy, but if it's way off... oh oh!:)

Senorita! Quieres aprendir espanol? Yo hablo espanol! Que coincidencia!

I was actually going to think of a paragraph that you could run through babel fish that would give some bizarre or humorous translation... but that made me think too much and I am at work afterall, they don't pay me to blog all day.

Isn't there some connection with the term Babel Fish and that book - Zen & the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance? Seems like I used to know that... but that piece of long term memory may have been overwritten now. Hmmm.

There's an old story, surely apocryphal, about an early effort at an English/German-German/English translation program. The text supplied for translation was, "the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." Twice translated, it came back, "the wine is great, but the meat is rotten."

Trust me on this: do not learn Spanish (or any other language) from BabelFish.

Pattygal - I don't know anything about "Zen & the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance?", but it is something I've always wanted to look into. I guess it's time to google.
Steve Bates - ok, I won't learn my Spanish from Babelfish, but I'm going to see what chaos it wreaks with some text. This is going to be fun!
