A scene at the vet's office. She (the vet) was offering her yearly Coggins Clinic. We rode my sister's horses from her house to the vet's place. The horses pictured here were already there. Posted by Hello

I've never spent much time around horses, but have always thought they were such beautiful creatures. My step-daughter has been around horses all of her life. She has just started exploring hoof care for horses that are unshod. She's ridden some horses that go without shoes and said their footing is unmistakably more sure. I'm wondering if this is a trend, or if it's more a California thing.

bryan - Heh, I thought this picture was so cute! I saw the horses with their heads out and said "I've got to get a picture".
dharma - I agree with your step-daughter, their footing is more sure without the shoes, but where we have to ride them, they do need them.

Nice shot!

Dharma - it's not just CA. I'm in northern Vermont and work with the statewide mounted search & rescue unit. After a couple years of experimentation, nearly all of our mounts are now permanently barefoot. We use the Boa Boot for weather or terrain that requires shoes, but most of our professional work is done barefoot. Our horses connect better with the ground unshod, their hooves are healthier, our farrier bills are worlds lower, and the horses themselves seem to prefer it.

It wouldn't work for every horse or every rider, but it's a beautiful thing when it does!

Stefanie, that is some great information. I plan on sharing the boot info with my sister. By the way, are you NTodd's "Stef"?
