What our taxes are used for.

Thanks to Faramin who advised me about the video,
I couldn't access it, so went over to Michael Moore's site.
There is an article entitled "How Far Will The Army Go?"
which tells about a 17 year old high school student's experiences when he decided to see how far the recruiters would go to sign up soldiers who were not up to grade. First, he told the recruiter that he dropped out of school - the recruiter told him how to get a fake degree. He also said he had a marijuana problem. No problem, the recruiter told him he could take a detoxification...
The army says it is conducting a full investigation.

Here's the link for the video -it does require Quicktime. I'm downloading the free copy as I type.

Rexroths Daughter has also has posted a link to the movie.

Update: Quicktime downloaded and video watched... Nice going, high school journalist and honor student, David McSwane!

Speaking of military, since we have been in Iraq since 2003, you might enjoy this article by Robert Scheer "Fiddling While Crucial Programs Starve." Remember this? "There is a lot of money to pay for this. It doesn't have to be U.S. taxpayer money," then-Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz told Congress days before the war, in testimony on the potential costs of invading Iraq. "We are talking about a country that can finance its own reconstruction and relatively soon." In the real world, however, this turned out to be utter nonsense.
..."Government is not here to do everything for everybody," admonished Missouri state Rep. Jodi Stefanick, a Republican representing suburban St. Louis. "We have to draw the line somewhere." Just not in Iraq, apparently....
Also mentioned in his article is this, about Missouri, ...Already the red state of Missouri is set to end its Medicaid program entirely within the next three years because of a lack of funds. As the Los Angeles Times reported, that will save the state $5 billion, but at the cost of ending healthcare for the more than 1 million Missourians enrolled in the program. That sum is less than half of what Halliburton, Vice President Dick Cheney's old company, alone has been paid for reconstruction efforts in Iraq, without much to show for it in terms of improving the Iraqis' quality of life...
I guess we know where we rate with the feds, eh?

Trees - I liked taking this picture because there were so many different types and we can see the differences right now while it's spring. This is in front of one of my jobs. There is a little creek in between those trees.  Posted by Hello

Ala Homer Simpson "MMMMmmmmm"

Would I be willing to work every stinking weekend?
I guess we'll see what type of deal I can get, or if I can even get a loan.

This is what the one in my shed would look like if I put a lot of money into it (and this little bike is worth the time and effort, we've gone a lot of miles, together). It needs so much done to it that it will take quite some time. I plan to bring it into the trailer and work on it while watching TV at night. I have the manual to fix it. I just need to find it. I guess that's something to do this weekend.

Some fun light news

Well, how do you like that? CultureGhost figured out his digital camera and has a picture of his eyes posted on his blog. He's such a good sport!

Damn the lies!

To go along with the post below, here is something I found at Whatreallyhappened.com. The article is from the Mirror and dated June 23, 2003.Bush Claims WMDs have been Looted.
PRESIDENT Bush has explained the riddle of Iraq's missing weapons of mass destruction by claiming they were looted.

He announced his bizarre theory after being accused of "sexing up" a dossier on the Iraqi threat by deleting warnings about the reliability of intelligence.

Bush told the US people in his weekly radio address at the weekend: "For more than a decade, Saddam Hussein went to great lengths to hide his weapons.

"In the regime's final days, documents and suspected weapons sites were looted and burned.

"Yet all who know the dictator's history agree that he possessed chemical and biological weapons and that he has used chemical weapons in the past."

Bush produced nothing to prove Saddam had WMD.

He could only say: "The intelligence services of many nations concluded he had illegal weapons. The regime refused to provide evidence they had been destroyed...

Oh, and look at this article.....
U.S. study: 'Unlikely' Iraq shipped WMD to Syria

Tuesday, April 26, 2005 Posted: 1458 GMT (2258 HKT)...The ISG said in an October 2004 report that the 1991 Persian Gulf War likely destroyed Iraq's capabilities of producing WMD, and that Iraq had none when the United States invaded in 2003...

Eric Alterman - oh, boy!

Bush's War on the Press. by Eric Alterman - I found article at "The Nation".
...Make no mistake: The Bush Administration and its ideological allies are employing every means available to undermine journalists' ability to exercise their First Amendment function to hold power accountable. In fact, the Administration recognizes no such constitutional role for the press. White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card has insisted that the media "don't represent the public any more than other people do.... I don't believe you have a check-and-balance function."..

That last sentece by Card is what I find truly bizarre. We are paying taxes which pay the government's salaries. Shouldn't we be advised of what our money is being used for? Shouldn't the media be taxed with getting that information out? How do I, oldwhitelady, find out what my (and your) employees (government officials) are doing? It's not like I can go and ask, right? If they want to lie to us, well, I guess we're fucked. I guess we are - we've been listening to lies for too long. Can you tell I'm pissed?

Here's the link to find your own Senator's phone number and e-mail address.

During last night's event mocking justice in America, the leaders of the Fristian Right had their audience program their cell phones with the number of the US Senate switchboard, (202) 225-3121, and asked them to call Senators this morning on their way to work. Though they want people to call their own Senators, they are also targetting members of the Senate such as Lincoln, Pryor, Chaffee and Hagel. Given the intense pressure they must be facing this morning, they need our support.

working this weekend and feeling sorry for myself

Since yesterday was Earth Day, my town is having a fantastic Earth Day celebration, today. I used to love going to them, however I have missed the last couple. "Why?" you ask. Well, I'll tell you why. Because I've had to go to work at the part-time job.
Ah well... my musical lineup, today, to make me feel a little happier:
Bat Out of Hell - Meatloaf
Dr. Hook Revisited - Dr. Hook
Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap - AC/DC
The Game - Queen
Queen II - Queen
and the last is a CD containing a mixture of country - Garth Brrooks, Joe Diffy, and Rock - Queen, REO, Survivor, Gordon Lightfoot (The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald) - That's the only song I like of his. I copied that song then gave the CD away to someone who liked the repetitive nature of his music (was that wrong?).

Open columns that were worth the time to read

Because I live in Missouri, I like to see what Kenny Hulshof, Republican Congressman for Missouri, is up to. While I was happy that he had chaired the investigation into one of Tom Delay's anti-ethical activities and found that Delay did break the rules, he was taken off the ethics committee:
That was before Speaker Dennis Hastert’s (R-Ill.) Wednesday Afternoon Massacre, when he formally ousted Rep. Joel Hefley (R-Colo.) as chairman of the ethics committee while also removing GOP Reps. Kenny Hulshof (Mo.) and Steven LaTourette (Ohio). Hefley was replaced by Rep. Doc Hastings (R-Wash.).
*snip*
As for Hulshof, he had not reached any term limits of membership on the committee at all; in fact, other GOP members who were asked to stay on had served longer. “I believe the decision was a direct result of our work in the last session,” Hulshof said, “particularly my chairing the investigative subcommittee” that examined ethics charges against DeLay. Hulshof, who described himself as “deeply disappointed,” said in a statement, “I strongly believe that my actions ... were in keeping with the best traditions of the U.S. House of Representatives. ... I wholeheartedly stand behind my subcommittee’s findings and do not apologize for my actions.”

I thought, "Hey, this guy may not be so bad, after all. I think he's actually thinking about the people." Well, I guess they can't change their spots, after all. The following links are some Letters to the Editor that I noticed in the paper, in the last few days. Looks like it's time for more letter writing.

GOP tax breaks favor the easy-money crowd

Hulshof returns to DeLay’s side after fling with ethics

Iced Mice

Iced Mice intriguing, doctors say.
WASHINGTON (AP) - It sounds like science fiction, yet an experiment in which mice were forced into hibernation and then revived with no apparent ill effects might ultimately lead to new ways to treat the critically ill.
*snip*
...Fresh air revived the mice, and testing uncovered no differences in behavior or functional ability between the treated mice and untreated ones, the study concluded.

Can you imagine how the poor mice felt? "Where am I? What was I doing?". Interesting article, though.

Aha!

Back, many posts ago, in the Book Meme, I mentioned that I was reading "The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide", by Douglas Adams. I've finished the first book "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." I know why Rugo carries a towel with her. I also know why Altavista named their translation tool Babel Fish Translation.

Fantastic article

American Values by Guy Reel. I found this at Common Dreams.
Mr. Reel first lists the most important American Values. He also lists values from history and for the future.

...Over the last twenty years or so, the most radical members of the right wing have claimed they've owned the core American values that I've just enumerated; moreover, they've claimed that liberals have tried to defeat them. Therefore, they argue, liberals are trying to ruin the American way of life. They claim that liberals are a threat to our very future. For those who question this assumption, they need only to listen to talk radio, Fox news and the Republican leadership who pass for responsible voices in our democracy...
...snip...
...What we have seen is the creation of a culture of hate in America, and that is not too strong of a characterization. The radicals vilify those who disagree with them -they must do this to survive. For without the enemies that they themselves imagine, they are nothing. After the imagined enemies are gone, they have nothing to rant against, except the notion of American values. Therefore, if they lose their enemies, they lose America...

He is absolutely correct in his assessment. The far right does vilify everyone not agreeing with them. The loudness of their exhortations cause many people who might believe differently, to think instead, "If they say this so boldly, I'm afraid to question their rhetoric, so, perhaps, I'm wrong". If this is said or thought often enough, it becomes fact - ingrained into their minds. When we talk of the "Koolaid drinkers", we might be talking about people such as that. The big problem, to me, is that the liberal view does not get enough press at loud decibals. That needs to be corrected. People need to be aware that there are times to disagree...times to disagree loudly and vehemently. Of course, with the Koolaid drinkers, it may be too late.

I killed My TV, and You Can Too!

I Killed My TV, and You Can Too! by M L Shannon.
...Commercial Music
Another way that these insidious Madison Avenue people get you to buy their products is with music. I remember a program on Public Broadcasting that was about the use of music in advertising. A number of students were shown a series of film clips of a snake, swimming in a pond. The first was silent, the others included different kinds of music. After viewing them, the students were asked to write a sentence or two describing what they thought the snake was feeling.
In one clip, our friend the aquatic reptile was enjoying his carefree swim. In another, he was filled with fear, trying to get away from something unknown. In another, he was the aggressor, chasing something unknown. And all the film clips were identical- except for the music.
Certain types of music can effect your mood, your feelings. Some of it is written specifically to arouse feelings of anxiety and used in commercials that want to make you afraid not to buy the product. Music within a commercial can change, and with it your emotions change. Poor Kitty won't eat what you have offered her. Sad depressing music to set the mood of Poor Kitty. So you open a can of Friskies Beef 'n Liver and Poor Kitty is gobbling it up. To a much livlier tune...

Reading this page reminds me how addicted to TV I was back in my 20s. If someone asked "What are you doing tonite?" I would respond by trying to think of what was on TV. I had favorite shows that could not be missed. Or if there was something (like a softball game or volleyball game that I was playing in) I would be upset because I missed my shows - that was way back before they discovered VCRs. I finally disconnected the cable and lost touch with television. I still have a TV and watch a favorite show or two, but it no longer matters if I miss them.

Is it possible to ever be safe?

Remember the Anthrax attacks and the "person of interest" Steve Hatfill?August 26, 2002, Hatfill Strikes Back by Joel Mowbray. Whatreallyhappened.com had a link to recent article about another doctor whose life was turned upside down because of the anthrax investigations.Doctor in anthrax case is left with broken pieces of a life by Barbara O'Brien.
Dr Kenneth M. Berry was an emergency room physician. His home was searched in connection with the anthrax, but he was never charged. He lost his job and his family. According to the article, he is currently unemployed. When I read articles such as this, I am reminded it is never good to be too complacent. Anything can happen at anytime.

Atrios probably already blogged about this, but....

When Blogs Bite Back by Howard Kurtz
..."It's very nasty and personal and scatological," says Washington Post reporter Dana Milbank...
..."You want to pay attention to what legitimate critics are saying out there," Nagourney says. "In journalism, you screw up from time to time. But it's become so toxic -- attacks for the sake of attacks."...
...Some journalists are unperturbed. CNN analyst Jeff Greenfield likes many blogs and doesn't much worry about "the baked-potato brains who say you're a media whore. . . . On the whole, I'm real happy to know there are a lot of people watching with the capacity to check me. I don't think that's chilling. It's just another incentive to get your facts right."...

If they hadn't left out so much with their reporting when we first started war-drumming toward Iraq, they wouldn't have such a problem. The reporting I heard and saw, was very biased, during the Kerry vs Bush presidential run.

Freaky Monday

As I've mentioned, I work 2 jobs. A full-time normal 40 hr week during the day job, and then a part-time job several nights a week. The part-time job just seems to have the strange moments. Last year, one of the girls in another department came in and said she saw a male streaker in the parking lot. Of course, several people from her department ran out to see if they could see him, too. The police were called. They came out and looked for him, but I don't think they found him. Of course, there was all sorts of speculation on who it was. Several people had been let go in the past couple months.
Tonite, a lady from another department came in to tell us that there was some drunk yelling out things like "blank (our business name) sucks." She said when we left, we should have a buddy or have our boss walk us out. About 9:30, a lady from another dept left with a male coworker walking her out. When the guy came back in, he said that the guy was still out there yelling. He said it sounded like the guy was over at the aparments across the street. He said the guy yelled "F*ck you", and when he turned around to see if he could see him, the guy yelled "yeah you, Fu*k you!" So this guy said he yelled back "No, Fu*k you!" and then he came back into the building. He was saying it could have been anyone who had worked there, worked there still (just not working that night), or someone who applied and didn't get hired. Yeah, we'll probably never know. Well, I stayed and worked until the lady who works next to me was ready to leave and we walked out together. We heard and saw nothing. What a let-down:)

Senate Committee Delays Vote on Bolton By Barry Schweid The Associated Press
Washington - President Bush's drive to make John R. Bolton the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations got sidetracked Wednesday as Senate Democrats forced a delay until next week of an important confirmation vote.
In buying time, they hoped to win over a pivotal Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Sen. Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island, by amassing evidence that Bolton harassed U.S. officials who challenged his judgment on weapons issues.
Chafee said Wednesday he is leaning toward supporting Bolton, which would all but assure Bolton's confirmation...

Good luck with that, Dems. Somehow, I doubt Chafee is going to lean away from supporting Bolton.

Boondocks revisited, again.........

A while back, I was complaining about "The Boondocks" being cancelled from my daily paper. I was quite unhappy and so were many other people. We called and complained and wrote and complained. The paper said, more or less, "tough". Well, on Sundays, I get both daily papers. Imagine my happiness when I found that the second had "The Boondocks" in their color Sunday comics. I called the first (they have a talk line where you can tell what you're thinking about, good or bad, and they publish it on certain days) and said I wanted to shout out a big THANK YOU to the other paper for carrying "The Boondocks". I'm waiting to see if they print it:)

Wages

Wages Lagging Behind PricesBy Nicholas Riccardi, Times Staff Writer

Inflation has outpaced the rise in salaries for the first time in 14 years. And workers are paying a bigger share of the cost of their healthcare.
For the first time in 14 years, the American workforce has in effect gotten an across-the-board pay cut.

The growth in wages in 2004 and the first two months of this year trailed inflation, compounding the squeeze from higher housing, energy and other costs...
....This is the first time that salaries have increased more slowly than prices since the 1990-91 recession. Though salary growth has been relatively sluggish since the 2001 downturn, inflation also had stayed relatively subdued until last year, when the consumer price index rose 2.7%. But wages rose only 2.5%.

Astronomers Discover Mysterious New Star Clusters
A UK-led team of astronomers has discovered a completely new type of star cluster around a neighbouring galaxy.
The new-found clusters contain hundreds of thousands of stars, a similar number to the so-called "globular" star clusters which have long been familiar to astronomers...
..."What is clear is that these clusters, like the globulars, are ancient. They are billions of years old - possibly amongst the first objects to form in the Universe."..

Awesome! Relocation, anyone? Ha - I know, we don't know if there are life sustainable conditions, and who would want to leave our lovely planet, anyway. Of course, there are some people who should leave our planet (the ones who insist on polluting and ruining the natural fawna and flora - They obviously don't care what the planet looks like).

Ford

Ford Shares, Bonds Decline After Carmaker Cuts Its 2005 Earnings Forecast Ford Shares, Bonds Drop After Profit Forecast Cut (
April 11 (Bloomberg) -- Ford Motor Co.'s shares and bonds fell after Chief Executive William Clay Ford Jr. cut the company's 2005 profit forecast and abandoned a 2006 target he set as part of a plan to revive earnings.

Shares of Ford, the second-biggest U.S. automaker, fell as much as 8.5 percent. The yield for Ford's 7 percent notes maturing in 2013 widened to its highest level since the bond was issued. Fitch Ratings changed its credit outlook on Ford to ``negative,'' and analysts cut their ratings on Ford stock...

So, what has been happening with Ford, lately. I haven't watched them for awhile, but there were their SUVs tipping over (but were using, was it Bridgestone? tires) - who ended up paying out - or did anyone. My contribution to the Book Meme.............

As indicated in my post below, Rugo at Rugo's Ramblings slapped me with the chain blog subject of 5 questions:

You are stuck inside Fahrenheit 451. Which book would you be?
Target Iraq: What the News Media Didn't Tell You,
by Norman Solomon, Reese Erlich, Howard Zinn (Introduction), Sean Penn -
I found this book to be quite an enlightening book which, of course, would immediately be cause for it to be burned. I lent my copy to my father and now my parents don't know where it is. That's ok, because my father lends me books which disappear for a year or two and then I bring them back.

Have you ever had a crush on a fictional character?
I don't think so, but if I did, it would probably be on Span, main character in "The Skook", by JP Miller - Span gets lost in a cave when a Satanic motorcycle gang dynamites the hill the cave is under. He's in there for quite some time. He has to learn to co-exist with what the cave has to offer. Man against nature is the main theme. He manages to adapt with the help of "the Skook" and when he finally gets out, he's a changed man.

What is the last book you bought?
The Witch's Grave, by Phillip Depoy (was the first one I pulled from the box of 3 from the Mystery Library - they send 3 books every month)

What are you currently reading?
Murder at Plimoth Plantation, by Leslie Wheeler
Death of a Hired Man, by Eric Wright
Mark Twain Selected Works
The Odyssey, by Homer (translated by Robert Fitzgerald)
The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide, by Douglas Adams
Missouri Gardener's Guide, by Mike Miller
(I tend to lay a book down someplace then, instead of going and getting that one, start on another. Sometimes, I have nothing to read. When that happens, I start, again, on one previously read - until new books arrive or I buy some more).

Five books for your desert island cruise (deserted island) package.
"Instant Boats", by Harold "Dynamite" Payson - Using this book, I can build a boat to row around to close islands. Possibly, even use it to get back to civilization, should I decide I need to get back.

"You Can Stay Alive!!", by Larry J. Wells & Roger D. Giles - This book should have some great tricks for handling nature and finding food.

"Life After Doomsday", by Bruce Clayton, PhD. - Assuming the US is still testing their warmongering weapons, I might be in danger if they use my island.

"SHOCK", by Robin Cook - I haven't yet read this one.

"FOUR TO SCORE", by Janet Evanovich - this book makes me laugh. I love Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series, but think this is the funniest.

Who are you going to pass this book meme baton to and why? (only three people)
Afarensis at Afarensis: Proud Member of the Reality-Based Community - he needs another reason to tell his wife when she asks why the yardwork isn't finished.
Weblackey atToyblog - she's a teacher and should be able to come up with the answers quite quickly.
Wanda at Words on a Page and Just Breathe - she has two blogs, which proves she has too much time on her hands.

newest book meme going around.

Rugo at Rugo's Ramblings slapped me with the chain blog subject of 5 questions:

You are stuck inside Fahrenheit 451. Which book would you be?
Have you ever had a crush on a fictional character?
What is the last book you bought?
What are you currently reading?
Five books for your desert island cruise (deserted island) package. - now, I'm assuming that landing on this deserted island was not my idea. That, maybe, I was shipwrecked and ended up here....
Who are you going to pass this book meme baton to and why? (only three people)
Ok, my answers are almost finished... Who will be the next victims?

Time to get a new screen for the window

Fake Flamingo blogging.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

When I moved into this lot, there were 2 trees in the yard. They were the evergreen type, not cedar, but probably spruce. The manager cut the tops off them one year (he went around all the lots and cut the tops off all the evergreen type trees - quite a few died) one of my lot's trees died. The tree the Flamingos are hanging out by was an inch high when I found it and moved it to the place the dead tree had been. I've planted a lot of stuff in this yard:)

My parents make me laugh, they really do.

Last weekend, while my sister and mother went to visit the Farmer's Markets (my mother is getting ready to sell plants, eggs, and vegies, again, this summer) my mother asked me to come out and visit my father, since I am busy so much of the time. No problem. I went over and stayed 4.5 hours and during that time - after we looked at his eggs in the two incubators, the plants they both have growing, chasing a chicken back into it's pen, watching TV with the sound blaring - he brought out a letter he received from Fort something telling him he needed to contact them to set up an appointment for his checkup. He was all pissed off because:
1) he's 87 years old
2) he already had an appt set for VA Hospital much closer
3) it said to call and gave a non-toll free number - he can't hear much and he didn't want to spend the money on a telephone call sitting on hold all day long.
He asked me to send them a letter. When I got home, I immediately wrote up a letter and dropped in a mailbox, next time I passed one. When I told my mother, she said "Ssshhhiiitttt". She had been planning to call them, herself. "Well, go ahead and do it his way".
My mother called, yesterday, and left a message on my answering machine "Did you send in Pa's letter?" She paused for a moment, then, "I'm just kidding, he got a note from the VA confirming his appointment and the nurse wrote on the bottom of the letter to ignore the letter from Fort something because it was sent in error."
Ha! Good times:)

and how are you this morning?

I took pictures of the two pink flamingos in my yard, lilacs, in my yard, just starting to bloom, and the white flowers (on trees at work) that are bothering everyone's allergies.
CDs grabbed for today's work experience:
10CC - How Dare You!
Queen - Innuendo
Queen - Made in Heaven
Queen - The Miracle
Rush - 2112
My day is going just great:)

Afarensis has some really good pictures and explanations of "burying beetles" and pythons. It's really good information. I don't have time to read it this morning, but I will be checking in this afternoon.

oh, fu*k! You know what I'm saying.....

CultureGhost has a post that simply says "Scary Word For The Day - Marburg". I didn't know what it meant, so googled...from UN Stresses Speedy Diagnosis in Fighting Deadly Marburg Disease in Angola...Yesterday the UN launched a three-month $3.5 million flash appeal to combat Marburg, of the same family as the deadly Ebola, which begins with severe diarrhoea, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and chest and lung pains, with a high proportion developing severe haemorrhage in the gastrointestinal tract and lungs.

Close contact with bodily fluids of infected people, as in medical care or burial, appears to increase the risk of infection and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says the most urgent needs are protective clothing for health workers, disinfectants, body bags, emergency kits and essential drugs.

It was foggy on the drive to work this morning. Posted by Hello

I was driving along with traffic and the people started slowing down and moving over to the right. When I was one car from in the front, I realized there was a trooper in the right hand side. Everyone had slowed down, so I did too:) Anyway, when the trooper turned off, the rate of speed increased drastically in the left side. I mostly stayed to the right because I noticed the sun peeking out through the fog. I could not get a picture of the bright orange orb as it was for a couple seconds. This was a second best.

Just asking...

This lady was telling us about the wild geese that live around a lake in town. The people think there are way too many. Because of this, they are trying to limit the amount of geese that are hatched. They have someone lure the geese away from the nest, then someone goes to the nest and shakes the eggs. This way, the goose will continue to sit on the eggs. If the eggs were broken or taken away from the goose, she would just lay more eggs.
Hm... Couldn't this be considered abortion?

Looking out the door.

What a day. Because I got to work 45 minutes late, I had to stay 45 minutes after. I left there and directly went to the other job and tried to take a nap in my car in the parking lot. I didn't, but just sitting there with my eyes closed helped. I got out of there 30 minutes after I should have. It was a busy busy night, but we stayed on top of the work. Last Thursday, I got out of there at 12:00 (should leave at 10:30). So, I stayed up tonite to post my Friday cat-blogging picture. My work is done until tomorrow. Time to get some sleep.

If we were given the option of birth

Nfamous at The Bottom Half has a great post called The Hoax of Religion vs the Purpose of Life.
He says that none of us asked to be here and gives us a possible scenario of if we were given the option:...Well here's the deal unborn person. You have almost no chance of ever having any real money and/or happiness in your life. You have a good chance of being born in a third world country...
It's an amazing post. I highly recommend going and reading it.

Oh, crap!

'No survivors' in US Afghan crash From BBC News ...
The statement said there appeared to be no survivors, and two remained missing.
It was the eighth and worst air crash suffered by US forces in Afghanistan since they toppled the Taleban at the end of 2001.
..
According to the article 16 are dead and 4 were Americans. A couple days ago, I was lamenting the fact that there were very few news items about Afghanistan and Iraq. Unfortunately, there are reports about both, now. Of course, they probably get overshadowed by the big news of the Pope's death and "coming soon to a theatre near you" burial.

Look at this article Iraq child hunger report denied
...Last week's report, by UN hunger specialist Jean Ziegler, blamed the worsening situation in Iraq on the war led by coalition forces.
About 8% of Iraqi children are now going hungry compared with 4% under former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, Mr Ziegler told the UN Human Rights Commission meeting in Geneva.

U S ambassador has this to say ''The surveys that have been taken... have indicated that the recent rise in malnutrition rates began between 2002 and 2003 under the regime of Saddam Hussein,'' Mr Moley said.
''If anything, vaccination, food aid have improved dramatically since the fall of Saddam Hussein,'' he added.

Color me stupid, but I don't believe it... Unless we managed to kill off a goodly portion of children during our "Shock and Awe" Show. Then the percentage of children, living, would be much less than before we started our bombing campaign.

names generators are fun

What My friends would really like to call me: is sugar.
Take What your friends would really like to call you. today!
Created with Rum and Monkey's Name Generator Generator.

I was at the Rum & Monkey Name Generator Generator page and found lots of names generators for all sorts of subjects.
There's another called "The Damned Hippie Name Generator".By using oldwhitelady, it gives me the name of "Goldenrod Brodderick". There's also a generator called "The "totally gay nickname Carl would give you" Name Generator". It gives "Mostly heterosexual Lovemachine" as my name. I think my favorite is "The Third Grade Insult Generator"...my name "Lieutenant Freaky A. Pointy Head". ok - I like it.

vacations might or might not be a good thing

John at Peregrineblog got back from his vacation:
Well, I'm back, and it is no small relief to be home. That's never a good sign at the conclusion of a vacation. I have deemed this the cursed cruise, as group and individual misfortune befell all three couples in our party.
What a fiasco for them. Amusing details.

My tree

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
This Ash tree has been growing in my yard since a couple months after I moved in. I was mowing one day and noticed the little start of a tree and decided to mow around it. I have a picture when it was waist high. My cat, Mogwei - I had to have the vet put him to sleep last year, was just a young cat and he had run out into the yard and was sitting under the tree. Since then, this tree has featured in many of my photographs. I love this tree. If there was one thing I did right in the past, it was allowing this tree to grow. In the summer, it creates a wonderful cooling shade. I took this picture on Sunday. There was a cardinal sitting in it so I ran inside to get my camera. I snapped him and moved in to get a closer photo, but the bird flew off. A little later, a black bird, of some type, flew in so I took a picture of his backside (it was the view available) and he flew off as soon as I moved.

Ah, Forsythia. Lovely. Posted by Hello

I didn't catch any of the news yesterday.

Having to get to work (1 hour late) and then going to the second job, I didn't have time to read the paper. I turned off the radio (tuned to NPR) because they were talking about something (can't remember now what it was) that didn't interest me. Worked an hour and a half over because we were quite backlogged. When I got back in the car, I changed to AM station to see what Coast to Coast was broadcasting. Sad to say, I didn't pay attention to that either. It was just background noise. Maybe, I'll do better today.

In honor of the Pope's death

The Fallen Priest Lyrics by Freddie Mercury

Free me, free yourself
A life of sacrifice controlled me
But those promises I made no longer hold me
Mercurial more wayward by the hour
The shackles fall away, I'm in your power

Free me, and free yourself
Come to me and let me lead you
I beg you, I beseech you to let go
My heaven is yours and heaven is all I know

We are mortal
In the hands of Gods who roll the dice
Searching for an earthly paradise
So hard to find
We are mortal
We are victims of our weaknesses and passion
We are reaching for the heights
(I am falling, I am falling from the heights)

But I promised I would serve
I should be a rock against depravity and sin
Oh no sin no sin
Free yourself, let your life begin, oh
To yourself be true
I am a man of God
I should not be here with you

Free me we are mortal, ah

Come a little closer to the fire
To love and live that one desire
Denial of that love is treason
The love that we make
The force of our lives and its reason

We are mortal
In the hands of Gods who roll the dice
Searching for an earthly paradise
So hard to find
We are mortal
Victims of our weaknesses and passion
(I am falling, I am falling we, we are mortal)

Why do I believe in you
You're destroying my world
Hold nothing back
Give me all there is
I want it all

This is where we stand
This is all there is
Prisoners of each others love
Prisoners of each others love

I love this song, but on the same CD is my favorite of all time, called "Overture Piccante" which also contains some of the same phrases as this song. The CD is called "Barcelona" and the songs sung by Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballe'.

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Oh, the Horror! I had a rough day, ok?

  • Personals Forum: Dating Alert! old whitelady thinks the TV department at Sears is a hot date

Do NOT go out with old whitelady. Watching TV at home was kind of romantic for a first date, but the second date should have tipped me off when she pitched a fit because the restaurant hostess wouldn't give her the remote. The third date finished me off: bringing a bucket of KFC to the TV department at Sears may impress a TV addict but count me out. And the SHOWS she picked...

  • Firefighters thwarted while trying to save TV addict old whitelady from blazing inferno

"We were screaming at her to jump," said shaken firefighter Marty Heep. "The last thing I heard her say before the building collapsed was, 'Hold on, we're almost at a commercial.' It's a miracle she survived." whitelady agrees. "I was Touched By An Angel!" she said fervently...

A couch-and-cushion Power User like old whitelady needed more than a stodgy floor model at Pottery Barn could give. Scientifically fitted to the contours of whitelady's back and hams, upholstered in beautiful Polyfur with the "Sticks at Nothing!" food-resistant coating, "The Incubator" has everything: butt-warmers, cup-holders, a napkin dispenser, and cushions that give like a fat lady's thighs.

"Look at old's front yard!" said letter carrier Roland Amado. "No dead cat, no mannequins, no Buick -- it's like a miracle!"

I love this tree.

Every year, I see this tree. I think to myself, "I need to get a picture of this tree while it still has it's flowers." Every year, I forget to bring my camera until it's almost blossom-less (from wind or the leaves have sprung out). Well, this year, I remembered to bring my camera.

Radio headliners

Terri Shiavo is dead. In fact, the radio said something like " Tom Delay is making it his job to punish the courts, saying they made their ruling without congress, etc..." What the hell? I thought maybe that hoopla would be over.

The Pope will soon be dead.

Michael Jackson still going to court.

You know what I don't hear much about? Troops being in Iraq and Afghanistan. Our stinking media!
