Woodland Hills Church

AOL has a story about a church that lost 1000 of it's 5000 members because of the preachings of it's pastor.
...Mr. Boyd lambasted the “hypocrisy and pettiness” of Christians who focus on “sexual issues” like homosexuality, abortion or Janet Jackson’s breast-revealing performance at the Super Bowl halftime show. He said Christians these days were constantly outraged about sex and perceived violations of their rights to display their faith in public...

...In the end, those who left tended to be white, middle-class suburbanites, church staff members said. In their place, the church has added more members who live in the surrounding community — African-Americans, Hispanics and Hmong immigrants from Laos.

This suits Mr. Boyd. His vision for his church is an ethnically and economically diverse congregation that exemplifies Jesus’ teachings by its members’ actions...

...One woman asked: “So why NOT us? If we contain the wisdom and grace and love and creativity of Jesus, why shouldn’t we be the ones involved in politics and setting laws?”

Mr. Boyd responded: “I don’t think there’s a particular angle we have on society that others lack. All good, decent people want good and order and justice. Just don’t slap the label ‘Christian’ on it.”
Amen! This sounds like a church I wouldn't mind attending! I wouldn't agree with his own personal stance on abortion or homosexuality
...He is opposed to abortion and thinks homosexuality is not God’s ideal...
but I doubt I agree on everything with anyone.

WNV symptoms

West Nile virus may infect more people in Idaho this year
...West Nile virus does not impose too much of a danger on most of people. Most people or more than 80 percent who are infected by the WNV experience no symptoms or mild, flu-like symptoms. About 20% of people who become infected with WNV will develop West Nile fever. Symptoms include fever, headache, tiredness, and body aches, occasionally with a skin rash (on the trunk of the body) and swollen lymph glands. While the illness can be as short as a few days, even healthy people have reported being sick for several weeks.

Severe symptoms associated with West Nile Viral infections include high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, disorientation, tremors, muscle weakness, paralysis and coma. Symptoms from infection generally appear within 2-14 days after the bite of the mosquito...
Mosquitoes are such nasty little bugs, but they are here to feed the bats, I guess... Except, in this article:
Myths & Misconceptions (& The Facts!)- Bats & Mosquitoes, they say that only a very small number of mosquitoes were found in stomachs of bats in some study. At the end of this article are "some interesting mosquito facts."

Friday cat blogging...

...with someone else's cats. Here, we have a manx cat... wait, that's a dog! How did that picture get in my cat blogging photos?
Her name is Lucy Lou or Cindy Lou - something like that. She answers to anything, really. I was visiting my friend, and the dog was allowed inside. She came bounding in as though she didn't want to miss a minute of my visit.

Next, we have a cat doing what cats do best. She's been busy sleeping, so was very tired when I arrived. She had to get ready to take a nap so she wouldn't be as tired when she started her next nap:)

As you see, there are no pictures of my cats in this post. I might have a picture, or two, on my camera, just didn't feel like uploading it, right now. They'll have to wait til later. I missed getting a really cute picture, last night. Mango was walking past my chair and Rocky Girl was walking beside him. They headed down the hall, with Mango stopping now and again. RG would stop, too. Every time he would start up, again, she would, too. It looked like she was annoying him, but they are the best of friends. Tonite, they were sitting right next to each other, as though conversing, or cooking up trouble. I stopped it by giving them treats.

A couple letters.

I was reading The Best of Craig's List, one day, and found many of the entries hilarious. Here are two that are quite different from each other, but both were sure fun to read!
Dear CATS: You make it impossible to love you!!!!

Thank you, people who dumped my dogs at the shelters

On the road to recovery.

Recently, I stopped over to see my friend who was in the auto accident. She's coming along fine. They had to get a hospital bed and set it up in the living room. She is grateful to her employment for allowing her to work from home. In the last couple days, she was supposed to go to the doctor to see if she could start trying to walk. She's happy that she's healing so well, but knows it's still going to be a long time before she's jogging, again. I like to send her E-mails telling her we need to walk:) She agrees. She says we're going to have to do a lot of walking (slow and short walks at first) to get her back to speed.

Biker Gang Auctions Off a Day With Them
Half of the final bid goes to the cystic fibrosis unit at a children's hospital.
Location is in Australia.
Get to spend eight hours with three or four Harley Davidson riders.
Get to visit a site of a shootout they had with a rival gang.
Get to visit a site of one of the bloodiest biker wars in Australia.
Auction is at eBay. I don't think I'll be bidding. That's too far to travel, besides, the beginning price is $1500. I imagine one would need to find their own way to Australia, as well.

I tried to find the link at eBay, but wasn't successful.

Guess what time it is?

Of course, no Sunday is complete without words of wisdom from Landover Baptist Church. Today's selection is Dating Tips for Christian Men. When you get to No. 2., there is the link entitled, Click here. Yes, it's quite a link. The actual title for that page is Pastor Orders Christian Men to Think Only about Jesus while Masturbating. Here's a sample of the suggestions found on the page.
...Specially made Tupperware seed-containers will be signed out of his office by Mrs. Watkins who will be keeping a record to guard against overuse. The sinner must catch his mistake in his numbered container before it reaches the ground. All containers are to be returned to Mrs. Watkins within one hour of check-out...
If you read my post below and clicked on the link, you'd know why I wonder if Jesus' General belongs to Landover Baptist Church.

Difficult to title, that's for sure!

Rescuing the tiniest Americans. Thank you for pointing that out! I wonder when the Christian Right Wing Nuts will realize the horrible deaths of these poor little... ahem... lives? and start working toward saving them?

If you have time, be sure to look at the comment thread.

Totally in love

When Saddie died, I mourned him as much as I would a person. He was always happy to see me. He followed me around, because he liked sitting on my lap and being petted by me. I really like that in a cat. Rocky Girl and Lady Fortuna had already decided they didn't like lapsitting that much, when I got them. I tried to teach them, but finally realized I could get a kitten and teach it.
Luckily for me, the kitten I thought I wanted was off on a field trip to a library or something. I played with two cats that day. The first was an 8 week old that looked just like Grey Feather. While I held that little kitten, I saw, at the end of the room, three month old Grey Feather, in a higher cage, acting all "pick me pick me". I had to play with her. The minute she was placed in my arms, I was lost. She's not Saddie, but she's working on the same temperament. I like that in a cat.

Heat-storms-cool down.

St. Louis Suffers: Heat, Rain, No Power
...In St. Louis, the weather has flip-flopped between sweltering heat and violent storms. As many as 500,000 Ameren Corp. customers in the area lost power Wednesday, making Thursday's heat that much more unbearable.

Progress in restoring power had been made, but Ameren said the number of customers without power rose even higher Friday, to 570,000, as a new wave of storms passed through...
A friend has relatives in St Louis. She asked one girl why they don't come to stay with her, the girl replied that she can't get any gas, for the car, to make the trip. She said many stations are closed, and the ones that are open, have long lines.

Friday Cat Blogging - Cotton was absent that day.

Cats show little interest in 911 truth as per a link in the comment section, from Blondesense's Peter Of Lone Tree.
They'd rather think about treats. Yes, I'd say that topic thread is right.
This little girl is trying to get a bug that's been hitting the screen.
While looking at the link, mentioned above, I found the Viking Kittens link. I had not seen it, or if I had, I'd forgotten about it. So cute!!!

Yet, another sunrise.

It makes you wonder how many of these photos I have, doesn't it?

Birth Control: Under Her Skin
...Implanon is the name of this implantable contraceptive. It's designed to prevent pregnancy for three full years after a doctor places it under the skin of a woman's arm. That means three years of not worrying about taking birth control pills daily, or changing Ortho-Evra patches weekly, or replacing Nuva-rings monthly...

But, on the plus side, it's been found to be more than 99 percent effective at preventing pregnancy...
"more than 99 percent effective" is a darned good percentage. It sounds like it would be kind of expensive, though, as the woman would have to have a local anesthesia to have it performed. I wonder if insurances will cover it? Back in the day, many insurances didn't cover "the pill". They still might not. It's funny, they were happy to pay hospitalization costs for having a baby, but not for birth control.

oh oh!

Turkey signals it's prepared to enter Iraq.
ANKARA, Turkey - Turkish officials signaled Tuesday they are prepared to send the army into northern Iraq if U.S. and Iraqi forces do not take steps to combat Turkish Kurdish guerrillas there — a move that could put Turkey on a collision course with the United States...

...Turkey's NTV television and Hurriyet newspaper reported the government has told the military to draw up plans for a push into northern Iraq and to advise on the possibilities such an incursion could lead to a clash with Iraqi Kurds or U.S. troops...

Photo has nothing to do with link

I happen to like this photo.

Governor says 1,146 bolts in Boston tunnel are unreliable. When I read that story, last week, about a section of the tunnel falling on the car and killing the woman, I was shocked and saddened. That poor family. But, sometimes, freak accidents happen like that. One minute our loved one is with us.... Isn't there some song about holding your loved one's close? It's a good idea, as we never know what the future will bring. Oh-oh, here's another article about the tunnel.AG reveals firms went back-and-forth on ceiling supports in ’99.

Is it time to go to work, yet?

Can you believe the weekend flew by so fast? It's Monday. Usually that's a time for people to start their work week. I Hope everyone has a good Monday. I plan to.

Was it all worth it?

They won't admit it, but Bush & Co. cutting and running from Iraq by Joseph Galloway.
...And the real news in Iraq is that the number of American troops who are fighting and dying in that place has fallen to 127,000 from a high of more than 160,000 late in 2005...

...The politicians are cutting and running from their war even as they doggedly deny that the thought has ever crossed their minds. They're now as feverish to get out of Iraq as once they were feverish to get in...

...The ownership of a war that's being abandoned by the politicians who launched it and fouled it up beyond repair now falls to the U.S. Army and the Marine Corps, who never had orders to put enough boots on the ground to get the job done. Now they'll be called upon to do even more with even less...

...Nearly 2,600 Americans have died in Iraq so far, and 18,000 more have been wounded. How many more will die before the last of them board trucks and helicopters and depart this detour in the war on global terrorism?...
Oil prices rally again, top $72 a barrel
...Oil analyst John Kilduff of Fimat USA in New York said there would be a “painful runup” in gasoline prices as summer approaches, and he said oil prices could rise as high as $80 a barrel by the end of June. Purchased today, crude for June delivery costs $74 a barrel...
I guess the plan to get Iraq's oil isn't panning out as well as it did in their minds. Lessening the amount of troops in Iraq isn't going to get us that oil, either. If you ask me, the apprehension of Saddam Hussein and killing of his sons wasn't a good enough reason for the loss of troops' lives, loss of Iraqi lives, the horrible high monetary costs, the hazardous leavings from bombs in the Iraq landscape and water, the vicious infectious diseases (such as typhoid and tuberculosis) attacking the Iraqi people, etc. But, hey, that's just me. Perhaps, to others, such as Halliburton, who managed to rake off a nice profit, it was worth it. To the "leaders" it was probably worth it. The biggest share of them, most likely, have stock in oil and warmongering companies, so they realized some nice profits, too.

What is more threatening to heterosexual marriage than gay marriage? Pissed off Patricia has the answer. And what a good answer it is!

Get well soon.

My roses of sharon are blooming nicely, this summer. Of course, they usually do:)

I'm posting these blossoms (instead of sending a nice get well bouquet) for Missouri Smile and her daughter(who's recovering from surgery) and to The Fat Lady Sings and Bitsy(who's been very ill) & Smokey Joe(who's also recovering from surgery). My "get well soon" thoughts, and hopes, are also floating out to these wonderful friends.

Friday Cat Blogging - They're sisters now.

Do you ever think about how it was before blogging (and digital cameras)? I would take pictures of the kitties, then take the film to a store to be processed. I'd pick them up 1) when I had the money, 2) thought of it, or 3) they called, telling me that the pictures had been there over a month. Pictures in hand, I'd put them in those little photo albums that came with the photos. I'd then take them to work, making all my co-workers take a look at them. I only had so many co-workers. Now, I can show the co-workers pictures on my didital camera, and then post the photos on the blog, where I can show them to lots of people. People I don't even know! Isn't technology great? :)

Early morning sun

I love to sleep late in the mornings, but if I did it too often, I'd miss these shots of the early morning sun. While I was uploading this photo, I could hear a stupid cat (as opposed to smart cats, like mine) yowling outside. My cats all ran to see if they know who it is. I heard Lady Fortuna hissing. How cute:)

How long did it take to figure this out.

Halliburton to lose exclusive Army deal
The Army is discontinuing a controversial multibillion-dollar deal with oil services giant Halliburton for logistical support to U.S. troops worldwide, a decision that could cut deeply into the firm's dominance of government contracting in Iraq...

...Government audits turned up more than $1 billion in questionable costs. Whistle-blowers told how the company charged $45 per case of soda, double-billed on meals and allowed troops to bathe in contaminated water...

...King agreed Tuesday. "Halliburton has done an outstanding job, under the circumstances," he said. But he added that Pentagon leaders ultimately decided they did not want to have "all our eggs in one basket" because multiple contractors will give them better prices, more accountability and greater protection if one contractor fails to perform...
Well, they shouldn't be sad if they don't manage to be one of the three companies chosen this fall. They've made a pretty penny off the govt... and ultimately, the taxpayers.

Truancy

Steve Bates, The Yellow Doggeral Democrat, has an article showing how ridiculous, irritating, and frustrating, those who make regulations can be. They Fought The Law
...The authority, saying that it wants to improve school attendance and the academic performance of children who live in public housing, made the proposal at a meeting in April and discussed it again last month. Under the plan, families would be evicted after a child had 10 unexcused absences.
Most people think of themselves first. Same with children. They really don't take time to think out the ramifications should they decide to skip school. (I remember back years and years ago, when one of my friends and I decided to ditch school (I didn't skip a lot, but this one still burns in my mind). We took off across the school yard and went uptown where the stores were. We hung out for a couple hours then went back to school, our forged notes, testifying to doctor appointments, in our hands. (Un?)Luckily for us, we weren't real bright. When we left school grounds, we ran right past the principal's office. BUSTED!) I realize 10 times absent seems a lot, but really, to a kid, it's not. Some families have more than one child. If one is truant and another isn't, would the family still be evicted? This idea to evict the family, if a child was truant 10 times, is a punishment to create hardship for the whole family.

unwashed peasants

...Just remember that with the Bush administration, disinformation is standard operating procedure, along with secrecy. It clearly sees the American people as a mass of unwashed peasants who are too dumb to understand what the elite is doing.

A roof and food

From Alternate Brain, this thoughtful post brings up a problem that has existed for some time. Homeless Heroes With No Name
Some thoughts about homeless Veterans, and a cartoon you absolutely must see. Today's "must read".

The Fourth of July has ended, the fireworks are over, the bands have gone home, the politicians have finished their campaign rounds, the tragedy of homeless American veterans remains unconscionably with us today.

Whether we support or oppose the policy in Iraq, can we agree on this? It is morally and patriotically wrong to have homeless and hungry American veterans in the hundreds of thousands, whom we walk past so casually on the street...
This is truly a concern that should be realized and resolved.

Pictures of the day.

My sister invited me over to ride horses. As you can see, the horses were thrilled. The hen and chicks did not go riding with us. They stayed in the yard and carried on doing what chickens do.We had the opportunity to go on a big cat hunt. The orange cat had to be thrown back as she was not big enough. The tabby was just right, weighing in at 17 lbs. My cat, Sgt Mango Goldstein, doesn't weigh as much, but he's also missing part of his tail.

I'm sure glad I got my fishing license. I watched and took pictures while my sister called and fed the fish. There were Koi, Goldfish, baby Bass and baby Bluegill. When she built the pond, there were no fish in it. I knew she put the koi and goldfish in. I asked if she populated it with the wild fish. She explained that the bass and bluegill arrived as fish eggs on a blue heron's legs. I never thought about it, but what a great way for nature to send fish to ponds that need fish!

Sun from this morning

I slept through the fireworks last night, waking at 12:45 to some soft explosions outside. A couple minutes later, all was quiet. All in all, the night was pretty tame - something I'm thankful for!

Happy 4th of July

Ah, you thought I would post pictures of fireworks from years past, eh? I'm not sure I have any, so you'll just have to be content with a shot of the congolium I put down in the hallway. Be safe my friends.

Mmmmm - good stuff to read.

Badtux's thoughts on just who is defending our freedoms
It's not the soldiers or the cops who defend our freedoms. It is our laws and our courts, starting with the Constitution and going downwards from there.
What a fantastic response. I'm going to take it and use it as my own.

Riverbend's thoughts on the death of Zarqawi
How do I feel? To hell with Zarqawi (or Zayrkawi as Bush calls him). He was an American creation- he came along with them- they don't need him anymore, apparently. His influence was greatly exaggerated but he was the justification for every single family they killed through military strikes and troops. It was WMD at first, then it was Saddam, then it was Zarqawi. Who will it be now? Who will be the new excuse for killing and detaining Iraqis? Or is it that an excuse is no longer needed- they have freedom to do what they want. The slaughter in Haditha months ago proved that. "They don't need him anymore," our elderly neighbor waved the news away like he was shooing flies, "They have fifty Zarqawis in government."
The rest of the post is just as interestingly thoughtful.

We can't all be young, thin, and beautiful.

I didn't realize my ex-boyfriend knew anything about computers. I wish he wouldn't call me names, though. Sure, I may be old, fat, and a hag, but actually typing it into a blog post and linking to me at Dog Snot Diaries, is a bit much!

Great expectations

Charley Reese has a good article in today's paper, but for some reason, I cannot locate it on the net. Hopefully, it will be uploaded to Charley Reese: Archives

???

Mr. Rabbit, would you like to take a tour of Graceland with the president?
Ms. Squirrel, would you like to have a drink with the president?

I can't understand it. If I read these creatures' body language correctly, neither want anything to do with the current president.

I work with a 20 y/o some days and a 21 y/o on other days. I doubt they know each other, and if they do, not very well. The 20 y/o told me that she loves George Bush. She thinks he is hot for an older guy.

I noticed on the 21 y/o's blog that she would like to meet George Bush. She thinks that would be cool.

Listening to the news the other day about Graceland and the goings on there, they talked to some stupid woman who was gurgling on about how cool Elvis was, and how cool the president is and how she couldn't pronounce Koizumi's name, but he must be pretty cool, too. What the hell???

Here she is

Grey Feather, in a quiet moment of contemplation.
