It was great!

So, I didn't win the powerball. I had one number! That doesn't get me anywhere. I did have the fortune to buy a winning scratcher, though. These are few and far in between all the losing scratchers! Something like this happens, maybe, once a year or so. I took a photo of it then bought gas and a couple twelve-packs (what of, I'm not saying:). See number two on this list, Signs That You're Broke, and close enough to number 7 on this list. I guess I can't quit my dayjob, yet! ...or the other job.

Friday Cat Blogging - Featuring....

Once again, it's Grey Feather.

She was sitting in the chair and looked so picturesque, I could not resist.

As NTodd says, but you go to blog with the photos you have, not the photos you haven't taken yet.

As always, Grey Feather suggests looking at the other wonderful animal pictures linked for Friday Ark at The Modulator.

Communing with nature.

This evening, I had the chance to walk through the park. I met this squirrel. It was making lots of noise, chittering and scolding me, so I figured it wanted it's picture taken.

Then, as I walked a little further, I found this spider. It ran up it's webline quickly. I took several pictures as it moved, but this was the best one.
I was finished with my stroll, so I headed back to my car. I saw this clump of clover. One of the ladies at work found a bunch of four-leaf clovers, this weekend. She gave each of us one. I thought, perhaps, I would have the luck to find one, myself. I had one hand on my car and leaned over the clump, using the other hand to swish around the clovers. As I straightened up, a sweet young thing came walking by and asked, "Are you all right?" I appreciated her thoughtful concern, but it put a crimp on my enthusiasm for further search of the elusive four-leaf clover.

Wasting money.

America’s 10 Biggest Wastes of Money Change for a Buck, By Chris Pummer.

I think this article is long overdue! I admit I've certainly embraced many of the wastes Pummer writes about. Time for a change. I'll have to figure out how to break some of these habits. It would be nice to have a healthy savings account, instead of making the merchants richer.

Sunday

I think
The Practical Press should be called Oldwhitelady's Practical Press. What happened? Did everyone else fall off the face of the earth? That's all I'm going to say.

Taking his plants for a walk.

Man Strolling With Pot Plants Busted
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Aaron Janssen made it way too easy. Janssen, 36, was arrested on marijuana charges Thursday, after he was spotted taking a leisurely stroll through downtown, carrying his recently harvested pot plants...

..."I look out the window ... , and I see him walking north carrying a green leafy substance, all pulled up by its roots," Burdock said. "He was carrying it like you'd carry a bundle of presents. It was tall enough where he was looking over the top of them, and he's just walking like nothing's going on."...
Sometimes, I wonder if these weird news stories are fiction, made up to titillate the readers.

trying to pardon itself...

Bush Seeks Immunity for Violating War Crimes Act, by Elizabeth Holtzman.
...The ''pardon'' is buried in Bush's proposed legislation to create a new kind of military tribunal for cases involving top al-Qaida operatives. The ''pardon'' provision has nothing to do with the tribunals. Instead, it guts the War Crimes Act of 1996, a federal law that makes it a crime, in some cases punishable by death, to mistreat detainees in violation of the Geneva Conventions and makes the new, weaker terms of the War Crimes Act retroactive to 9/11...

...Creating immunity retroactively for violating the law sets a terrible precedent. The president takes an oath of office to uphold the Constitution; that document requires him to obey the laws, not violate them. A president who knowingly and deliberately violates U.S. criminal laws should not be able to use stealth tactics to immunize himself from liability, and Congress should not go along.
They knew what they were doing, they knew they were violating Geneva Conventions and War Crimes Act. They figured they could use fear to get away with it. So far, fear has worked well.

Friday Cat Blogging... not Grey Feather, again..?

Last week's Friday Cat Blogging showed Lady Fortuna and Grey Feather. Someone mentioned (not on bloggy comments) that I needed to stop showing so many photos of Grey Feather because people might get the idea I like her best.

Here is a picture of Grey Feather and Grey Feather. Notice how her ears are very similarly held for the photo. I'm thinking Grey Feather must be a duplicating shape-changer as this picture makes her look very much like Rocky Girl and Sgt Mango.

And, here, is another picture of Grey Feather. Her eyes sure shine brightly when flash is used. It makes her look almost Cottonlike, doesn't it?

As always, Grey Feather suggests looking at the other wonderful animal pictures linked for Friday Ark at The Modulator.

Thursday thought for the day

Seeing the butterfly, floating along, warms the cockles of my heart.

Good news, bad news, no news.

Charges filed in infant abduction
Thank goodness! Luckily, the baby had a birthmark, and the relative (of the abductor) noticed the make-up on the baby.

Fort Hood soldier from Missouri dies in Iraq
Unfortunately, there are some people, in the same area as the baby story, who will be saddened.

Osama Captured/Hanged
I figured this would be an eye catcher. It's actually the message about the virus that had been floating around on the Internet(s), some time ago.

Bluebird of happiness

My friends and I met the bluebird of happiness, yesterday. We were walking around a lake, when I noticed the bird flying down from the limb and back up, over and over. We went closer and found it had fishing line wrapped around the limb and it's foot. I was the tallest, but even with the limb being held down, could not break the line. I grabbed hold of the limb, too, and as we yanked on it, to bring it closer to the ground, it finally gave, and broke, falling on us. Luckily, the bird was not killed. As I was closest, I picked the bird up in both hands and found it was attached to a hook. I pulled the hook loose from it's thigh. Friend said it was a bluebird and thought it might have a broken leg. As I put it onto the ground, to see if it might live, it took off, flying perfectly. Happy that we were able to free it, alive, as we finished our walk, we hoped the poor little thing will be okay.

Arr, me hearties, guess what day it is?

The Scurvy dog and me went searchin for booty...no, not that type of booty, more like doubloons, pieces o' eight, treasure, and quaff some grog. Unfortunately, he's a Lily-livered Scallywag, and after we got loaded to the gunwales, we decided to take pictures - Aye, I be the one in tan leathers.

Shiver me timbers! Does this outfit make me look fat? Seriously, I think I look the thinnest I've ever looked! Yo-ho-ho!

By the Powers! And what type of uniform is he wearing? You'd think he'd at least dress like a pirate to get in the spirit of:
Talk Like a Pirate Day!...Yarr...He must be a Son of a Biscuit Eater!

So much going on.

Bush says hunt for bin Laden has not slackened
...The Washington Post reported that the search for bin Laden had gone "stone cold" and Democrats also contend the Iraq war has shifted resources and attention away from that hunt.

"You know, there is a kind of an urban myth here in Washington about how this administration hasn't stayed focused on Osama bin Laden," Bush said at a news conference. "Forget it. It's convenient throw-away lines, you know, when people say that."...
I guess Osama's still hiding. Where oh where can he be? He must think he's a movie star, putting out so many videos. He sure knows how to bring on the fear.

Family Begs Attacker to Return Mo. Baby What type of creepy freak would steal someone's baby?
...The attacker walked into the home, told Abby Woods' mother "I'm here to take your child," then slashed the young mother's throat and fled with the 1-week-old child...

When I was young, an acquaintance showed up with a Doberman Pinscher. I asked her where she'd gotten it. It was in someone's yard, she walked right up to it and stole it. She kept the dog for a couple hours, then realized she couldn't take it home. She told the owners she found it running loose. I realize it's not the same as grabbing someone's baby at knifepoint, but that's pretty whacko behavior, too.

Gas prices are down to $2.09 a gallon, today. It's been lowering all week. It was high through the summer vacation time, when more gas would be consumed. Those oil companies know how to make an easy buck! I wish I had an oil company.

Atrios has been posting a photo of Karl Rove with Mickey Mouse ears, with each post. I missed the beginning of that. I wonder what it's all about? Oh, I just realized... Disney World/ABC/Karl Rove's machinations.

Tom Hanks and Red Hot Chili Peppers on SNL tonight. Steve Martin and Prince are going to be on SNL next Saturday. Wow!

Friday cat blogging - Teamwork

Don't look at the boxes or the brown leaves on the plant. Look at the two cats. Lady Fortuna is pulling leaves off the plant and dropping them down to Grey Feather to play with.
I like Grey Feather's pose. I could use it as a photo by itself.

Check out the Friday Ark at The Modulator.

Here's a bizarre story

Tenn. Police Probe 'Feline Jihad' Case
...In his commentary, Gerskin said the strays fed by a "neighborhood cat lady" have brought filth and disease to his home, and local Humane Society officials haven't been able to stop it.

As a result, he wrote, "I've officially become a trapper and it's time to take a walk to the river."...

I liked this picture.

I thought it would make a nice photo for the following article, because who knows what's hiding behind the grass?
Bush to bin Laden: "America will find you"
...Bush spoke a day after The Washington Post reported that the search for bin Laden, believed hiding in the mountains along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, had gone "stone cold" with no credible leads in more than two years...

I hadn't realized

This article spells it out, doesn't it? The Dark Wraith calculated the numbers and posted them in this article for us.
Special Blog Post: Only Numbers, By Dark Wraith.
Criminals killed 2,996 people on American soil five years ago. Those five years mark 1,826 days, or about 43,824 hours, or approximately 2,629,440 minutes. Our world moves onward, and with every passing moment that awful day recedes further into the history of our people even as it weaves ever more deeply into the fabric of our future...
Go Read. This article is well worth the visit.

Do you know where your kitties are?

Hey, Pretty Girl. Meow! I don't know what people are thinking when they allow their kitties to roam the neighborhood. Don't they realize strange people will take photos, of their little darlings, and post them on the Internets?

Been to church and back.

Don't Get Caught On The Toilet When Jesus Comes Back!
...That is why a man who touches his devil snake while urinating is damned to an everlasting Hell. Some lazy housewives complain about the mess when their husband doesn't guide his privates while eliminating liquid waste, but I would much rather have to sponge off a plastic toilet seat or silk flower arrangement over the tank four times a day than spend eternity without my Christian husband in Glory...
I don't think I want any male using my bathroom if he's not going to guide his privates while eliminating liquid waste! Fellas, if you're coming to my house, and have to urinate, you're going to hell!

...Jesus is not going to accept any silly excuses. He is not a liberal, nor is He a scientist or modern doctor! He is the Son of God, and his favorite remedy for curing everything is to burn everyone who doesn't do exactly what He commands, IN HELL. Dear Friends, Jesus is no respector of sin. Whether it's masturbating, fornicating, voting democratic in a national election, or even murdering someone, it's all the same in the eyes of God!...
Well! Now we know how we're supposed to be voting. Funny stuff!

A couple stories that caught my eye

Spanish Fashion Show Rejects Skinny Models
...The association said Friday it wanted models at the show running from Sept. 18-22 to project "an image of beauty and health" and shun a gaunt, emaciated look...
Yay! I think that's a good idea. I've often thought that the "emaciated" (as beautiful) look is the wrong message to send to our youngsters.

Town's Top Cop Quits Over Nude Photos of Wife
..."They have no morals as far as I'm concerned," said Shirley Anderson. "That's the whole thing I think - morals. You should have respectable people in office. They need to go somewhere else where this is accepted."..

.."They were vulgar," Larry Dismore, owner of Larry's Drugs in Snyder said of the photos, some showing the chief's wife with an American flag draped off her shoulder...

..."My wife is 6-foot-3 and weighs 300 pounds," he said. "If there is somebody that thinks they can control her, have at it. I have tried for 11 years and haven't been able to."...
I think what pissed them off most, was the American flag being draped over her shoulder. They should be happy she wasn't burning it! Hmmm. These people are complaining and making a big cry over nude photos. My question is - Just where were these photos? and why were they looking at them? It sounds like these narrow-minded folks have some morality issues, too.

Getting ready for the day.

I almost got a picture of a hummingbird, this morning. I've a busy day planned, so was outside, watering some plants, when I heard a commotion on the other side of the bushes. I snuck over, and on the ground was a poor little hummingbird, working it's little wings, but not going anywhere. I picked it up and it tried to fly. I didn't see any wounds, so when it hopped off my finger and into the bush, I left it. I went in and got the camera (the cats were hungrily waiting by the door). I went back out, but when I parted the bushes, the little bird managed to get it's flight wings going. Off to the trees it flew. I'm happy. I prefer a flying hummingbird to getting the picture.

So, the song, Love is the Drug for Me, by Roxy Music, was running through my head - I loved that song! Then, another favorite, I want a New Drug, by Huey Lewis and the News, came to mind. I realize those are old songs, but it got me wondering: How many other songs about drugs are there?

Friday cat blogging - Grey Feather

Grey Feather demonstrates how to use paper bags properly. The bag was sitting between a chair and the table. Against the chair, the cooler was sitting on a plastic bucket. Once she was finished with her photo session, she managed to knock the cooler off the bucket and into the cat food, spilling cat food all over the floor. She didn't help pick it up, but she watched to make sure I did a good job.
Grey Feather thinks all cats should have a kayak. She has a great time. Anytime I bend near it, she jumps onto my back. She thinks that's great fun. Of course, I could just be making those things up. She really could be hiding from me. Perhaps, she's scared. Yeah, she looks scared, doesn't she?
Grey Feather reminds us to check out the Friday Ark at The Modulator.

Booming tissue transplant industry

Hundreds of Body Parts From Broker Recalled
...It is the second scandal in less than a year in the booming tissue transplant industry. Cadaver tissue is used in more than a million transplants each year in such routine operations as back surgery and knee repairs. While such donated tissue does tremendous good, it is also little regulated, a three-month Associated Press investigation found earlier this year.

Improperly processed or poorly tested tissue can lead to infections like hepatitis or AIDS or even death. Last year a scandal unfolded around Biomedical Tissue Services, a New Jersey company accused of using stolen bodies and of shipping nearly 20,000 potentially tainted body parts...
When I read this article, I thought of the book and movie, Coma, by Robin Cook.

Just a couple more photos.

Can you stand another couple photos from the camping/floating trip? Here's where we were just starting out. My sister is in my green kayak. She had trouble getting into it and ended up in the water. I certainly know how that is! Right after I got it, I took it to a lake and while trying not to get wet, slid right off the boatramp and into the dip!

We camped alongside the river. Here's a Sunday morning picture of the river, once the fog started lifting. It really was a beautiful place and the campers all seemed to be pretty friendly.

Polycats

Hemingway Home in cat fight
...The reason? The U.S. Department of Agriculture says the author's one-time home in Key West needs a license to exhibit the descendants of the original polydactyl, or extra-toed, cat he is said to have received from a ship captain in the 1930s...

...Herding cats 'It's beyond insane,' said Cara Higgins, the museum's lawyer. 'This is the same agency that quit researching mad-cow disease because of money, yet they have no problem investigating the activities of the Hemingway cats.'...
I found this in today's paper. Along with the article, they showed a photo of a white kitty drinking out of the kitty fountain(it was once a urinal in a bar). There's also a picture of Ivan, the two-year old orange and white cat, who's scaled the wall five times this year. Ivan's picture shows the paw spread out a bit so the viewer can get an idea of the extra toe(s).

Here's a website with photos of Polycats. Those kitties look like they have mittens on their little paws. How cute!

Camping

My cousins invited me on another float trip. I asked sis and bro if they wanted to go. We took my kayak and cousin brought an extra canoe. I found out that I really LIKE having a single person kayak better than rowing with another person. Sis and bro got to find out if they liked kayaking. I think they both did. The scenery was great. The river was low in parts, but we had a good time. We stopped a couple places to swim, but the water was so coooold! Camping was quite an adventure. Sis and I slept in the tent. Have you ever walked into a bar where the music was too loud to hear anyone talk? That's how loud the neighboring campers had their music playing. One good thing, though, the song Jackie Blue came on and I hadn't heard that one in years! I fell asleep to the loud music, and then my sister decided call it a night. As she entered the tent, I woke up, of course. Finally, I was drifting back to sleep when a car drove by and *BOOM*!, a couple seconds later another *BOOM*! We tore out of that tent to see what the noise was. For some reason, I thought the auto I heard might have run off the road, but...no... luckily, it was some jerks firing some sort of fireworks. The others said it was artillary shells. They set off another or two, then shot a couple fireworks into the sky. It was quite an adventure!

I love them all!

Beautiful photos posted by Dharma Bums site.
Good Planets are hard to find.
Saturdays, Robin Andrea and Roger post photos received from readers. It's a wonderful idea, and the photos are TERRIFIC!

Best Tactical Response

Why the U.S. Is Holding Its Fire on Iran
....U.S. and European diplomats have agreed, according to several sources, that the best tactical response is tact...

...For his part, President Bush didn't exactly seem to be playing along with the game plan. Speaking to veterans at the American Legion convention in Salt Lake City, he responded with a sharp condemnation of Tehran's actions; "The world now faces a grave threat from the radical regime in Iran," Bush said. "We know the depth of suffering that Iran's sponsorship of terrorists has brought. And we can imagine how much worse it would be if Iran were allowed to acquire nuclear weapons...
Hmmm. Seems like I remember hearing dialogue similar to this about another country that started with "I". I wonder how we're doing there?

67 killed in latest Iraqi bombings
At least 67 people have been killed in a series of rocket and bomb attacks in Baghdad.

The latest fatalities bring the death toll this week to over 400...

Bloody summer in Baghdad with record casualties on all sides
...Around 3,500 civilians were killed in Iraq in July, one of the highest death tolls for a month since the US led invasion of 2003.

Meanwhile August was one of the most lethal months for the Americans with the killing of 53 soldiers and marines...
It doesn't sound good, does it? Wouldn't all these fatalities be good enough reason for the US to hold "Its Fire on Iran"? I wouldn't think we could fare better with them. They haven't even been economically sanctioned for 10 or so years.

Friday Cat Blogging - Featuring Ted!

The cats thought they needed a vacation. This is Ted. He's their stand-in for this Friday's cat blogging session. He finds humans to be very annoying. Especially humans carrying cameras. He doesn't really like cats much, either.

Ted suggests that we check out the Friday Ark at The Modulator.
